When discussing extensive source equipment repairs, this question is asked more frequently than any other. Both scenarios have their own sets of pros and cons. A few are listed below:
Purchasing a New System
PRO’s:
- Brand new equipment has the most current technology
- A new system is more cost-effective and efficient when it comes to energy consumption/costs
- New source equipment packages generally come with a decent factory warranty
- Any new equipment package worth its weight will be NFPA99 compliant
- If maintained properly, a new system can give you years of worry-free operation
- You may have the opportunity to up-size during the whole process
- If noise has been a concern, newer equipment systems may be quieter
- A new, state-of-the-art system could be more reliable over a period of time
- Tax breaks may be available for replacing with an energy efficient system
CON’s:
- Replacing can mushroom into a huge, time consuming, expensive experience
- If you are going to replace, be prepared to deal with engineers and state governing agencies
- Get ready for lots of inspections and regulatory approvals
- You may need to make some major upgrades to meet the current NFPA99 codes
- Upgrading auxiliary items such as utilities, seismic, current space constraints, housekeeping pads and more may be necessary
- Considering all the planning, prep and obstacles, it can take many months or longer
- Was it mentioned this could get super expensive?
Retrofitting Existing System
PRO’s: (case study)
- It may be possible to get years more use out of your current system with some TLC
- Replacing pumps can give an old system a new lease on life without the new system headaches
- The current equipment may not need to go through regulatory channels
- The existing system may be upgradeable to meet current NFPA99 codes
- Stay with your existing footprint, utilities and room constraints
- New warranties come with replaced pumps or components
- The process generally takes much less time than replacing
CON’s:
- Older, outdated systems generally need more maintenance
- Outdated equipment is technologically behind the times – it may not be as energy efficient
- Items not replaced will have no warranty – you are on the hook for breakdowns and repairs
